Side effects

Another girl and I had to travel all the way up to the upper west region alone. Granted, we had two guys from our group most of the way, but it was still a bit scary. We arrived in Wa and were met by three current volunteers. It was great, they instantly made us feel welcomed! We all hung out all night. The next day, three of us went to Jirapa. It is a smaller town in Ghana. We spent a few days there, walking a lot. Drinking. Water. Lots and lots of water. And we were introduced to Pito (tastes like tea but has alcohol in it). We sat with a bunch of the locals and talked and drank. It was a lot of fun.
So the days are great. The nights, not so much. The first night, my travel buddy had a night terror. If you know, those are really freaky Anyway, I could not sleep the whole night. I sat there and stared at the door and window next to it all night. I was freaked out. I kept telling myself I was okay, but I could not close my eyes. I think the mefloquine is taking a toll on me already. It supresses your appetite (which is fine for me, but offensive to the hosts) and makes you paranoid. The new environment probably does not help.
Other than that, I am having a great time. The people are all so friendly. Sometimes a little too friendly! But they mean well.
Tonight, we are watching the futbol match. Tomorrow, my travel buddy and I are going to Kukaratumi with the same two guys. There, we are staying in a hotel for a few days before going to a homestay (host) family.
Have I talked about bucket bathes? Very interesting. I think everyone should experience that. Here, we bathe in the morning and at night. It's so hot and dirty, it is such a great comfort to.
Trotros. I forgot to mention. Not as bad as the trainers made us believe. They fit about 15 adults in one kind of like the van in lost. Four not so great smelling people in one row. Sometimes, they have children on their laps or animals in the trotro. Another experience you should not miss out on. Just once.
I can not wait to find out where I will be placed and to meet my homestay family! I will keep you updated as frequently as possible!
I got a phone. It is hard to explain how it works. So I buy my minutes and have to plug it in the phone. I but two dollars worth yesterday and used them to call home. Sorry, had to talk with the Momma first! Anyway, so I do not know if it costs to recieve a phone call in the states for you. But here, if I recieve a call, it is free for me. Texts work the same way. I hope that makes sense. I do not have the phone number with me, but my mom has it if anyone wants it! I have to be going, only had an hour worth of computer time!!!
Love you!!
